The Influencer Campaign
Campaign: Invitation to ‘The Landless’ film premiere and reception hosted by Global Witness, London 17 November
Brief: Global Witness would like to invite environmental influencers and activists to the London premiere of its new short documentary, ‘The Landless’. Which highlights the day-to-day experiences of the Landless Movement in Brazil; a brave and resilient community fighting to protect their land and livelihoods, and for this land to be protected in law.
Date: Thursday 17th November
Time: 7pm – 9.30pm
Location: The Conduit, 6 Langley Street, London WC2H 9JA
Doors open at 6.30pm for welcome and registration. The short film will begin at 7pm followed by a special panel discussion and Q&A, moderated by Jonathan Wheatley, Financial Times with Claudelice dos Santos, environmental activist and representative of the community, the film’s director, Fernanda Ligabue and Veronica Oakeshott, Head of Forests Campaign at Global Witness. Guests are then invited to a reception to close out the evening.
The documentary is a result of Global Witness’s investigations into deforestation and human rights abuses in the Amazon and features a community in the Amazon that is under constant threat due to land grabs linked to the world’s biggest agribusiness companies and financial institutions.

Jonathan Wheatley is a Lex writer and emerging markets specialist at the Financial Times. For the Lex column he writes commentary on the stories of the day. For the FT’s world news, markets and analysis pages, he writes about development, macroeconomics and other issues facing developing countries. He was previously the FT’s bureau chief in Brazil.

Claudelice Silva dos Santos is a human rights and land defender from the state of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. Claudelice defends land and denounces human rights violations resulting from land grabbing, logging and crimes against the environment. Claudelice has continued to fight for justice since her brother José Claudio Ribeiro dos Santos and his wife Maria do Espírito Santo – both environmentalists – were killed in 2011.
Fernanda Ligabue is the filmmaker of The Landless. Fernanda is a talented and accomplished filmmaker, photographer and documentary maker from Brazil who specializes in environmental and social issues, with a deep understanding of the Amazon and experience working on film projects around the world capturing environmental abuses.
Veronica Oakeshott is the Head of the Forests Campaign at Global Witness where she leads the campaign to cut off funds to businesses that are destroying climate-critical forests. Veronica has worked in parliaments (Westminster, Holyrood, Nairobi), government (FCDO) and the third sector and has over fifteen years’ experience in driving policy change and building campaigns for social justice.
