Campaign: Take A Mini-Break for Plastic Free July
Brief: B Corp SBTRCT is using Plastic Free July as a springboard to urge consumers to buy refillable or solid toiletries when travelling this summer to address the alarming plastic waste crisis.
There is an estimated 171 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world’s oceans today ; a figure that is expected to quadruple by 2040 if we don’t change behaviours. However, the hard-to-recycle ‘Mini’s’ market is at odds with sustainability goals, with the plastic-to-product ratio much higher in these products.
Items less than two inches in size – such as every tiny cap on travel-sized products – are an issue in the recycling sorting process , with UN and World Travel & Tourism Council naming Single-Use Plastic (SUP) toiletries as a hotspot issue for sustainability, and a reported 980 tonnes of travel-sized toiletries being dumped every single year.
Despite this, 61% of us buy travel-sized cosmetics ; #travelbeauty has 16.9m views on TikTok; and Google Trends research shows a peak in search for travel-sized toiletries and travel-sized skincare every summer.
To support Plastic Free July and the continued reduction in single-use plastic waste, SBTRCT is urging people to ‘Take a mini-break’ and switch from travel mini’s to a solid or refillable skincare alternative.
