Name: The Tree Crowd
About: The Tree Crowd is a powerful new idea, combining tree-planting and food-gifting in a bid to help end poverty and rewind deforestation in Africa. Two years in the making, the ground-breaking new social enterprise launches May 2022.
The Tree Crowd goes beyond usual tree-planting and carbon-offsetting offerings. It is a gifting service for food aficionados. When a customer adopts a tree, they (or their chosen recipient) is sent a bundle of high quality artisan treats. The goods have all been made with ingredients from the region where the tree is planted.
Africa has the highest rate of deforestation globally with 4 million hectares of forest being lost every year. That’s the equivalent of 5 million football pitches. The reason is poverty. Small-scale farmers make up 70% of the continent’s population and they clear forests to grow short-term crops.
The Tree Crowd is tackling the root of the problem, supporting farmers to grow long-term, high value crops – sustainably. By adopting a crop, customers give farmers fruit and nut trees that will last for generations.
Founder Mustansir Amijee, who was born in Tanzania, explains:
“It’s been my dream to change lives through enterprise. I want to tackle the linked issues of poverty and deforestation in a sustainable way. The Tree Crowd joins up the pieces of the jigsaw in a way not done before.
When it comes to climate change, The Tree Crowd is smarter than tree plantation initiatives because our trees are part of the economic infrastructure, they are crop trees. We’re addressing the root cause of the problem: poverty. We work closely with partners at every stage of the supply chain, from growing seedlings through to manufacturing final products.”
Every tree adoption comes with a certificate with links to updates from the farm in Africa, and a foodie treat made from local ingredients. As a member of The Tree Crowd, they can track the progress of the adopted crop and its impact. Amijee explains how the brand is different:

Tanzania grows some of the finest produce in the world. It’s famous for its Kilimanjaro coffee and Zanzibar spices. We’re giving ethical consumers in the UK complete traceability of their goods. We’re enabling them to gift these wonderful products and understand their story at the same time. This is a unique gift idea and the point is, everybody wins.”

You will receive a gift box and a tree crop such as avocado, spices, coffee and cacao planted for you by one of our farmers.
