Sustainably Influenced: A discussion about mindful wardrobe choices

Organised by Seven Six Agency

Monday 1st July 2019 | 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Arboretum, 2A Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0HF

Is there a link between our insatiable appetite for the “next new trend” and social media influencers posting daily outfit looks which can be purchased in a matter of seconds? Are apps like Instagram luring us down a path of over consumption and neglecting to do their bit for the environment? How can we as influencers/consumers be more conscious about our fashion choices?

While clothes were once seen as a long-term investment, the consumerist society we live in now has created a culture of “fast fashion” –we buy cheaper garments for short-term use before replacing them with the next trending item. The fashion industry is thriving with clothing production doubling between 2000 and 2014.

According to Greenpeace, the average person buys 60% more items of clothing and keeps them for about half as long as 15 years ago.

What does all this mean? A disastrous impact on our environment.

On the panel, we will have Ethical Influencers founder, Besma Whayeb, Fashion stylist Tanya Varma and Head of Community Partnerships at Depop, Steve Dool. The talk will be hosted by fashion blogger Bianca Foley.

Fixing Fashion Workshop with Nicholas Robin

Organised by Ethical Influencers and The Fashion Common Room

Monday 24th June 2019 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Wolfson Lecture Theatre, SOAS University, Bloomsbury, London, WC1H 0XG

Who made your clothes and what impact is ‘fast fashion’ having on the planet? How can we fix fashion to provide decent jobs and keep within planetary limits?

In February, the UK Parliament’s green-watchdog the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) published a landmark report on clothing consumption and sustainability. It called for urgent Government action to cut textile waste, improve conditions for garment workers, and to support new ’sharing economy’ business models for fashion – such as hiring, swapping or subscription clothes services.

The Fashion Common Room and Ethical Influencers are pleased to welcome the EAC’s Policy Specialist Nicholas Robin to discuss how we can end the era of throwaway fashion and create a new circular fashion economy based on reuse and recycling. One where we buy better, buy less, share, hire and keep clothes for longer.
