About us: Project Broadway will tackle the challenge of reducing London’s environmental impact, one high street at a time, starting with Broadway Market, Hackney, London.
We will show the world how a community in a city can reduce its Carbon Footprint by 15% and half its waste in a year. We will implement sustainable practices in each individual business as well as working with the entire community.
We will also explore Green Technology and implement these solutions into the area and businesses, for example we plan to fit a Bubble Barrier (wall of bubbles) into the canal at the bottom of the street to trap the waste and prevent it from entering the Thames and consequently the sea. We will collect the plastic and recycle it ourselves at the refill/reuse/compost waste station that we also plan create within Project Broadway. The recycled plastic will be made into beautiful products to be sold back to community, paying for the maintenance of the Bubble Barrier and highlighting how to close the loop on plastic pollution.
Other systems to implement will be a return scheme to reduce single use items on the food stalls and coffee shops.
Everything we learn through this project will be shared through a free online platform as sustainable ‘how to’ guide for other businesses and communities to follow.
This project exists to demonstrate that we can take charge ourselves to make sustainable change happen. We do not need to wait for new governmental policies, or the COP26 summit, we do not need to wait for tomorrow. We just need to know how to create change and then we can act.
